But I love it.

I have used Psych Engine since 0.6.3, and it has been a long ride. Unfortunately, it’s absolutely dead now - no more updates. It’s been that way for a while at this point, but only now is it really starting to hit me in a more noticable way. I used to use Github as a great way to get answers to frankly silly questions using the issues tab. I kinda wish Discussions was used instead for things like that, but whatever. But my problem isn’t that the dev has more important things to do, it’s that since everything is archived, the only way to get help now is through their Discord. I am NOT going to yell about it again, I promised myself that I wouldn’t, I’ll just state that is fucking dumb and move on.

They had to archive it in a state that… Works, but needs bugfixes. The Linux build works, but when attempting to open the file dialouges, it crashes, which means it’s basically impossible to use the engine for its intended purpouse of making mods (although playing them is just fine, except in cases of weird capitalization because people make their mods on Windows which doesn’t have that requirement which means FUCK YOU, BUGFIX OUR MOD!). A few lesser issues - Freeplay items are out of order, for some reason. Weeks appear correctly, but the order of the Weeks feels fucking arbitrary. Window movement is something I find a lot of fun to do in some harder songs, but it is basically impossible, as it starts lagging heavily.

Honestly, I tried to work with PsychLinux for a while, but it’s been just such a pain in my ass that I nowadays just run everything in Wine. It used to not work on Stable 9 but Stable 10 works fine. Even window movement works, so that’s nice. I still try all my mods in PsychLinux to make sure things will be fine regardless of OS, as should anyone with a shred of decency. And also, while it’s topical, guys can we please fix d2d1.dll on Wine? Please :( most FL plugins use it, and if they don’t have a Software Rendering backup, it renders them impossible to use. Even if it’s stupidly inefficent, it can be mopped up later! I beg.

But, yeah. If I didn’t enjoy fiddling around all the issues, you probably wouldn’t have seen so many mods from me, nor would I have three seperate projects I would be working on within Psych right NOW… Maybe it’s just the charm of modding, maybe it’s how easy it is comparitively to modding other games, I dunno. Aparently, it’s really hard to find artists, though. I did pay someone for sprites, waiting on those to come in, but now I need BGs, so FUCK.
